Cotton fibre is one of the oldest and most versatile raw materials used by mankind. Derived from the plant of the genus Gossypium, cotton has been cultivated for millennia because of its softness, breathability and strength. It is one of the most widely used natural fibres in the textile industry, and its transformation process, from sowing to the creation of yarns, is a fascinating journey that combines tradition and technology.

In the rug industry, this material has traditionally been used for the warp because of its high strength. The loom consists of cotton yarns arranged lengthwise, on which the weft is interwoven to form a textile surface. In the case of rugs and flatweaves, the choice of warp material has a direct influence on the strength, flexibility and durability of the final piece.

However, we also find cotton in the weft of some carpet models such as Surco. Together with jute or wool, cotton influences and plays with the thicknesses of the fibres, at the same time as it gives structure to the rug.

In our rugs we give priority to local fibres as far as possible, which is why we use Pakistani cotton for kilims and Indian cotton for dhurries.
