Can Armengol is a 16th-century manor house located in the historic center of Palma de Mallorca. Its recent restoration, encompassing nearly 3,000 m², was carried out in collaboration with architect Claudio Hernández, along with a team of archaeologists, restorers, and artisans. This comprehensive project preserved the original Mallorcan architecture and materials, while introducing a contemporary vision that enhances the island’s architectural heritage.
The interior design of the residences is inspired by the concept of the Mediterranean home, characterized by spacious open areas dedicated to common spaces.
This project aligns with Raw’s values, as its interior designer Isabel López Vilalta noted that the intervention was respectful of the building’s original state.
We aimed to restore all existing elements in good condition, giving them a second life and generating as little waste as possible. We salvaged the building’s original hydraulic tiles for use in the bathrooms, walls, and floors.
Additionally, the new materials were carefully selected with the intention of valuing and revitalizing local craftsmanship and trades.
Handmade clay in various formats was used for flooring, lime plaster on walls, and painted baseboards, just as it was done in the building’s early days — very understated and honest. Local stone countertops and natural-finish oak wood were also incorporated.
To select the furniture, the interior designer conducted an extensive process of curating pieces designed by Mallorcan, Catalan, and Spanish authors from the 20th century, along with locally sourced antiques. Among the chosen textiles are custom-made Cotlin Raw rugs, which bring warmth to the tiled floors.
An all-encompassing project that is entirely respectful of the original Mallorcan architecture, reimagined through a contemporary lens. A true commitment to protecting and enhancing Mallorca’s architectural heritage.
