At Cotlin Raw, we are constantly exploring noble fibers that bring beauty, durability, and authenticity to our rugs. That’s why we’ve introduced abacá, a plant-based fiber native to the Philippines that connects us directly to nature and ancestral craftsmanship.

Abacá comes from a tropical plant in the banana family (Musa textilis), grown primarily in the Philippines. The fiber is extracted from the innermost part of the leaf and is known for its exceptional strength, flexibility, and raw, organic appearance.

For centuries, this fiber has been used to make marine ropes, high-quality paper, and traditional textiles — which is why it’s often referred to as “Manila hemp.” Today, its presence in contemporary design makes it a sustainable, character-rich choice for projects that value the natural and the honest.

It is highly resistant to salt, humidity, and mold, and the fiber is prized for its unique combination of strength, sustainability, and natural beauty.

At Cotlin Raw, we work with abacá using artisanal methods, honoring both its origins and its expressive potential. Through the handloomed technique, we craft rugs that preserve the fibrous character of the material — embracing neutral tones, subtle reliefs, and natural imperfections as part of their inherent beauty.
